How old is a little kid?

My 12 year old niece hates when I refer to her as a little kid, so based on maturity how old is a little kid?

Even if you do think she’s a little kid, (she is young) 12 is about the age where children start to become very aware of their own autonomy, and prefer to be treated as an adult. Even if she is a little kid in your mind, it doesn’t hurt anyone to avoid that terminology.

There are different ways to "mature".  One of the first stages of maturing is to have a shift in interest.  A "child" becomes less interested in playing with toys and spends more time doing things that "older" kids might do.  It isn't really about a certain age.  It doesn't happen at a certain age because every child matures differently.  Some might shift interest at around 10 years old but others might be around 11 or 12 when they shift interest in what they do.

If your niece is offended by being called a "little kid" - then she feels that she isn't doing "little kid" things anymore.  Consider things she did three years ago compared to things she does now.  Is there a noticeable difference in what she spends her time doing.  Example - less time playing with toys and more time doing other activities that she hadn't been interested in before now.

BTW - a child being willing to give away many of their toys is another sign they have matured past the "little kid" stage.  They might save one or two "favorites" - but they are willing to give away many of their toys because they don't play with them anymore.

Middle school aged and under, I consider a little kid because of their lack of maturity.
