That's totally up to you and your finances. Just bear in mind insurance companies are not in the business for you - but to make money from you. Over the years we had numbers it wasn't realistic for us to carry dog insurance so we didn't. We had a vet who was willing to let us stage pay if we hit a bad patch, knowing we'd pay off her bill before anything, which we did. People say save in a separate Dog Account - but for us, the intentions were there but it never happened.
I'd imagine vet costs for a big dog would be higher than for a small dog, so with a Saint, you may be better to take out insurance. Just check the 'excess' which is usually based on what a normal vet visit would cost = you pay the vet and the insurance premium. Does that really make sense? Always read the small print because insurance companies will always wriggle out of paying out, if they can.

Depends on the dogs health. Is it a well bred dog with guarantees of health or a BYBed dog? There are genetic issues with every breed that each are predisposed to. Find out what ailments or illnesses that breed is most common. Each breed has it's own set of predispositions but well bred dogs are bred to breed out the negative traits &/or faults.
It is kinda a 50/50, you pay big bucks to get a dog that is well bred & of guaranteed good health or pay a cheap price for a BYBed/Puppy Mill & pay high Vet bills. ???
