How do dermatologist see if your skin has issues?

I think I have skin barrier damage on my face ... I have symptoms of it but how would I dermatologist know for sure if it is?? I have an appointment in 4 days... how will they exam it? Any instruments used?

They make visual examinations using their eyes and in some cases magnifying equipment. In other cases they take very small samples and have then analyzed in a lab.

They look at your skin and sometimes look through a magnifying glass to get a closer look at anything suspicious.  They see skin damage and skin cancer every day, so they can identify and treat whatever problems they might find.  Good luck.

They look with their eyes, and then if they want a closer look at something they see - they use a magnifier.  Try not to stress about it.... :)
