Portion (actual number) / Total (actual number) = Portion (percent) / Total (percent)

The Total (percent) is always 100.

6/40 = x / 100

Cross multiply: 40x = 6(100)

x = 15, so 15%

The fraction (6/40) expressed as a percentage = 100(6/40)% = (60/4)% = 15%, Note:

% is shorthand for 'divided by 100'.

Percent = Portion divided by the Base. So you base is how much she spent at the store. And the portion is how much she spent on just fruit. When you do this division, you'll get a decimal. To convert the decimal into a percent, you'd multiply by 100.

You can write questions of this type in "natural language," where the concept of "What percent" is written as p/100

Here is what you really want to know:

$6 . . is . . "what" percent . . of . . $40?

6 . . . = . . . . . p/100 . . . . . . .x . . . .40

6 = p/100 x 40

- same as -

6 = 40p /100

Solve for p, already defined as "the percent that 6 is out of 40"

1) Reduce the fraction to lowest terms

After you have reduced it, you will have this:

6 = 2p/5

2) Clear the fraction by multiplying both sides by 5 and letting the denominator cancel

30 = 2p

3) Divide both sides by 2 to isolate p, already defined as "the percent that 6 is out of 40

15 = p

This result means that $6 represents15 percent of $40.

Answer:

Yoko spent 15% of her money on fruit.
