Why do people lie on their linkedin profiles?

For example, my cousin is a librarian at a school and she lists that she is a scientist working for NASA

Internet pretenders and trolls can be found on almost any website.  We are certainly inundated with them here on Yahoo Answers.  The motivations for doing so are many and varied.  They can range from immature individuals, to those with a need for any kind of attention, to people who feel compelled to belittle others or glorify themselves, all the way up to criminals trying to scam, or even kidnap, unwary strangers.

or people who just want a little tongue in cheek fun, because you know they arent a NASA engineer really.  Not everything has to be nefarious

Why don't you ask your cousin? Perhaps she wants to look more successful than she really is. Linkedin doesn't verify that what people post is actually the truth.
