Does sodium chloride absorb moisture from the room?

Update:

They say it's not as effective as calcium chloride, but will it work?

    Will it work?  Yes.  But recall that the air is going to be replenished from an outside source, so sooner of later you will have water-soaked salt and the same level of humidity that you started with.
