Why has there been a shift from calling coronavirus 'covid'? Is it an example of what Carlin called 'soft language'?

coronavirus is the virus itself.
COVID-19 is the disease.

Soft language consists of euphemistic expressions that "conceal reality" and "take the life out of life." In other words, "weasel words", like "Asian American", "Native American", or almost half of the words that Americans use daily.
