Ancient economies were based on the trade of "real" things.  I.e., money had an actual intrinsic value.  It doesn't any more.  Money is only worth something today because people treat it as if it is.

A basic answer is the sectors. Modern economies have financial, banking, transportation, manufacturing, electronics, mining, shipping, health care, and so on. Ancient economies were dominated by agriculture, mining, and commerce (including luxury goods). Oh, and the slave trade.
