What happens if you can't afford to bury your son?
What happens if you don't have the money for a funeral or burial?

this is why people need some cheap life insurance.

If you have no money for even a cremation, the body will remain unclaimed and eventually the city or county will bury or cremate and either hold his cremains in storage, or put them in a "potter's field" a burial site for unclaimed persons.
You might also want to see about contacting a local medical school to see if they are interested in the remains for study.

Have him cremated. There are pine boxes. Don't have a funeral. Pauper's graves are only for people without family or John Doe, Jane Doe victims. Your son has family - you. Call every place in town and hopefully, you can find one for only a few hundred bucks. Sell stuff to pay for it. Get two jobs if you have to.

Pauper's funeral, the state pays if no one else can. Very basic and they say when it is going to take place too. The local authority can also keep the ashes if they wish, as a deterrent for people who can pay and just pretend they can't, or if it's a burial it will be in an unmarked grave. However if you can convince them you can't pay then they will be more sympathetic and let you have the ashes/simple wreath tribute and such.

In some places:
Then there is no funeral or burial. The body is cremated, with no service.
In some places, there is a burial, but in a government-owned field, which may later be turned into a park or even sold to developers, there is no service, and either no gravestone, or just a something to mark the location with a number so that they can find it later.

You can get govt money to pay for a VERY basic funeral. They used to call it a Pauper's Funeral in the UK

In what country? In the US they get cremated and places in a special cemetery or innew York they are buried on the island for example

The taxpayers of the local jurisdiction will cover the cost for the disposal of the body. There will be no service, funeral, etc paid for by the taxpayers. Just the disposal of the body. It is a necessary to society to maintain hygiene by properly disposing of bodies, so this has ben done all throughout history.
You won't have any say in if he is cremated or buried, or where. Any burial will be in what was once known as a "potters field" but is a section of a cemetery reserved for indigent burials. There will be no headstone.
