it can also be old pipes... you say burst but a hole blasting through a weak spot is much the same  

you need a qualified plumber to look over all the pipes 

many Many homes in the USA need re-piped (all new pipes) $3000.00 to $10,000.00  -- if it is galvanized pipe

but there are some copper pipes that were lower cost and are bad too .... if your water is caustic 

and yes freezing ,, most homes have pipes covered in areas that freeze with proper  freeze protection facets 

this should be clear if that was the problem ... frozen break is lower cost repair one spot and done

Freezing, manufacturing defect, the quality of the water flowing through them, too much flux used when soldering, all can lead to issues in copper piping that range form in holes to bursting.

no.  it requires freezing weather in 90 pc of cases.  the other ten percent is plastic pipes that haven't yet been replaced with the newer plastic product

No. Owner neglect. Freezing temperatures will (without safeguards) freeze the water in the pipe, and then the pressure of the ice expanding causes the pipe to slowly split open. Then, when the ice melts and water sprays out people use the wrong term "burst" pipes. Bad soldering of joints would be a failure (not accident) (and imo very rare).
