The peoples' political representatives are elected directly by the people. In the modern age this now includes state senators. It also refers to how open government is to hearing from thee people.

--  America is not, and has never been, a free country going back to the pilgrims.

--  America is a republic and a republic can be either a dictatorship or a democracy, or like America, something in between.

It's supposed to be "A government for the people, by the people." But the way things are now, it's For the wealthy, by the wealthy. It's the 1%ers that rule the country, not the people it represents.

Democracy, every person has a say in how the "government" works.

Republic, Groups of people gather to appoint an Agent to speak for them.

A Republic easily turns to a dictatorship, when the people get lazy, having no interest in how the government rules them. The first step is to keep reappointing the same agents to leadership, until such time as the agent decides his/her position is superior to the governed. The appointed MUST be replaced regularly to prevent this.

Suggested Amendment: No elected official may serve consecutive terms in office, No appointed official of leadership shall remain in the same office more than five years.

America is a republic, not a democracy.  A democracy is ruled by the majority vote of the citizens.  A republic is ruled by the majority vote of leaders elected by the citizens.  It is a representative government.
