How are referendums processed?

    In the UK they are counted in constituencies in the same way as a General Election, except there is only a yes or no choice. In fact several referendums have been run at the same time as an election to save costs. Unlike voting for MPs, the total votes cast are tallied up across the country to give an overall yes/no result, rather than by constituencies.
