If you can’t work out what a text editor is, then you should probably not be a programmer. Artist? Maybe. Programmer? No.

Most of the professional or other person use the text editor to simple notes.

A text editor is used to edit plain text files Text editors differ from word processors, such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, in that they do not add additional formatting information to documents.

Most programs involve code which must be input to the computer in text format so that the computer language translators can work on it.  Those translators have limited input capabilities and text is one of the simplest possible inputs.

You should learn emacs, because that will put you on the correct side of the battle between emacs and vim. If you think that emacs is too much, try TECO. Bear in mind that emacs was originally written in TECO,

Windows provides a basic text editor, Notepad. It's good for basic text editing. Text editors are useful for writing anything when you do not want extra formatting added (such as is done by word processors). Some good free ones with extra features beyond Notepad are Editpad Light and Notepad++.
