France were naive expecting the Maginot line to keep the Nazis out but they just went round it ( ring any bells , Trump / Mexico?).

They only managed to resist for a few weeks before surrendering. No one can fault the soldiers bravery and they allowed the British to be rescued but they were poorly led.

They then formed a collaborating government with the Nazis but the French resistance fault an effective guerrilla war.

No doubt they were of significant help to the Allies esp for D day, but it would be a massive exaggeration to credit any one in France from saving us from the Nazis (esp De. Gaulle who hid in London for the war and then proceeded to hate Britain)

The D Day landings and subsequent liberation of Europe were very dependent on the French Resistance, who prepared the way for the Anglo-American Forces. Then allied casualty rate on and immediately after D Day was very high but would have been higher still but for the bravery of the French Resistance.

That makes no sense.  Of the 6 years of WWII, France lasted for only a few weeks at the beginning.  They barely had much impact on the war at all.

Why do people who start a question with "Why do people…" not want an answer just an opportunity to share their opinion?

I'm of Polish Jewish ancestry. I'm thankful to France. But most thankful to America.

Vichy France betrayed Britain. France refused to go on the offensive when Poland was being invaded. The Ruhr was nearly defenseless and if they had went on the offensive, the war would have been a short one. Instead they stayed hiding behind their Maginot Line, to which the Germans would completely ignore by invading the Low Countries. France arrogantly thought Germany was doing exactly what they were doing in WWI and prepared an entire defense near Belgium’s border without it being screened for protection in the proper regions. So they were taken completely by surprise when the Germans had their forces encircled with their panzer divisions and blitzkrieg tactics.

The French government completely surrendered. Now, when the Soviets were being completely wiped out just like the French were being in 1941, did they surrender? No. They died in the millions and refused to surrender and were able to launch a counteroffensive In the winter. France should be embarrassed, they are the main ones who let WW2 happen. They did nothing when the Rhineland was militarized, and actually helped Hitler destroy Czechoslovakia when they had a security treaty signed with the country to protect their sovereignty. The “We Surrender!” Stereotype is well deserved. Pathetic.

Germany conquered France without much trouble.  Your question doesn't really make much sense.

  • France Joined Hitler.....it was Vichy and the individual french who helped
