Why are many customer service businesses busy during the COVID-19 crisis?

When I try to use customer service lines, they keep saying that there are delays due to COVID-19. Why?

    they cannot come in to work, because their cubicles are so close to each other.

    Probably because they have employees out due to the virus.  If they have fewer people to provide the customer service it is going to take longer to reach them.

    Many are working with reduced staff due to social distancing restrictions and state-mandated staff reductions.
