Which of the following measurements is precise?

57.7 mL or 57.68 mL and why?

    57.68 is more accurate than 57.7 , because as a decimal it goes intothe hundredths. '57.7' only goes into tenths.

    They're both precise, but the latter is more precise.

    .. (2) we cannot say a measurement is "precise" without comparing it

    ie.

    .. precision is a relative value not an absolute value like accuracy is.

    .. 57.68 mL is precise to the 0.01's column

    since 0.01 is a higher precision than 0.1

    .. 57.68 mL is more precise than 57.7 mL

    RTM,  counting is a measurement.  There is always error in measuring even things that are discrete.

    LE Grant.. let's assume the numbers are +/- something in the right most digit and the rest of the digits are "TRUE".

    Neither is precise, because neither is counted.  They are both measured.

    what do you mean? do you mean MORE precise? because no measurement is perfectly precise.

    It depends on context.

    57.68 MAY be more precise, but it rounds up to 57.7.

    More decimal places may look more precise, but more often than not, the precision is not meaningful.

     pi = 3.14159265359 may be accurate to 11 decimal places. but sometimes using 22/7 (=3.14285714286 for 11 decimal places) for pi works every bit as well. or even using 3.14 can get you in the right ball park.

    4 digits (sigfigs) is more precise than 3 digits
