Is it normal for a doctor's office to ask for your social security number when making an appointment?

My primary doctor referred me to a specialist and I called their office to make an appointment. The secretary picked up and asked for general information and then wanted my Social Security Number, so I gave it to her. I told my Mom that they asked for the number and she said it was odd that they did so. Is this normal?

No. The reason that you asked your mom is the same reason they asked for the information. To be sure you are a legal person and not an imposter.

Some offices file by your SS number. I would give them the last 4 digits only.

you didn't have to give it to her. when you get to the appointment, ask her why she wanted to know.
