If it is a spring assisted, you'll need to wind up spring before attaching the cable so there is enough power to help raise the door.

I guarantee there will be a hundred 'how to' vids online. They will explain FAR better than someone one here.  Google it.

The best thing to do is hire a professional door installer to do it.  Even if you do get the cable back on the door, chances are the door will not hang straight.  Looks bad, wind, small critters will find they way in through the part that is up.  You will end up finding a snake in your garage.  Also, there is a powerful spring and you will be working off of a ladder. That makes it probably the most dangerous job around the house.  And, it takes some tools and skill.  But, look at utube for the type of door you have.

Don ... we can't for sure say without seeing the situation, or at least having a diagram of the door -- do you have a brand and model number?  without that, you're going to have to hire the work done by an outfit like Overhead Door -- and I know they charge about $100 just to show up.  The difficulty is that the cable, as you've no doubt discovered, in many installations is under tension when installed ... and the amount of tension has to be equal on both sides of the door.  -- grampa
