A hockey player is standing on his skates on a frozen pond when an opposing player, moving with a uniform speed of 12 m/s, skates by with the puck. After 1.0 s, the first player makes up his mind to chase his opponent. If he accelerates uniformly at 4.0 m/s2 (Assume that the player with the puck remains in motion at constant speed).

opposing player has a 1 second head start.

opposing: x = 12m/s*(t + 1s)

first: x = ½*4.0m/s²*t²

they're equal when

12(t+1) = 2.0t²

This quadratic has a negative root we can ignore and a positive root at t = 6.9 s ◄

x = 12m/s * 7.9s = 95 m ◄

OR

x = ½*4.0m/s²*(6.9s)² = 95 m
