what is kool-aid?  is it like squash/cordial?

    Vaguely in that it's a soft drink generally made up for children.  You buy it as a powder and mix it yourself.  All the flavours are very chemical tasting, so in that sense it's more "fake" tasting than squash.  In the US they don't have the word "squash" for a drink.  It's either a sport or certain members of the pumpkin family which they mentally categorise differently to Brits, oh, and they use "cordial" for an alcholic drink we'd call a liqueur if we met one.  The last time somebody on here mention cordial as a drink there were several outraged responses from people assuming the person was serving booze to children.  It was funny.
