Because most of what you pay for is NOT the coffee but the cost of sitting in a nice environment with free wifi, heating lighting, aircon ,free newspapers etc.

If you dont want to pay for that then go to McDos..same coffee just go and sit on a park bench.

If they were Way overpriced, no one would buy them. Dunkin sells a cup of coffee every 8 seconds, so they must be doing Something right.

Customers are willing to pay such a price, and to quote a manager I had in retail,

" We're not in business to give things away ".

Because restaurants and cafes make money by marking things up beyond the price of what you can make it for at home. That's literally how those businesses make money. You can make every single drink on the menu at home with the right materials and equipment.

Businesses have overheads and wages and still need to make a profit. People pay for the convenience. I could ask why are McDonald's fries so overpriced.
