If the Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees on its axis relative to its plane of revolution, then who made that decision?

You might like to call that entity 'God'.   But then again, you might not.

Apparently it was Theia, the proto-planet that tilted the Earth and gave us the Moon.

    No one!!! made that decision.

The Earth is a spinning sphere, and as such it undergoes 'precession'.  Precession is were the axis of rotation wobbles/tilted.

The current angle of tilt is reducing.

Over a period of approximately 41,000 years this angle varies from 24.4 to 21.8 degrees.

It will affect the climate, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

If you have a gyro or a child's spinning top, when you set it spinning, it wobbles. The Earth does exactly the same in space.

The Earth makes other movements in space too!!!  Notably 1. the orbit varies from near circular to a narrow ellipse. The Sun being at one of the foci of the ellipse, not the centre. 2. The plane of orbit is only a mean plane. because of the Moon it moves up and down out of this plane.  3. Within the mean of the plane it does not move in a 'straight' line of orbit, but moves in an out of its orbital track/ All caused by the 'Moon'.

I like to think that because of all these subtle movements, we  , the Earth, dance through space,

At the Equator we rotate at about 1000 mph. our orbital speed about the Sun is about  66,000 (mph)miles per hour.

Its all part of Newtonian dynamics.

Nobody in authority ever accepts blame for some decision they have made so one must presume that no one made this decision either.  It isn't my fault.  It is that other guys fault.

The angle the earth is at varies throughout history, and will change again.

Today, the Earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees from the plane of its orbit around the sun. But this tilt changes. During a cycle that averages about 40,000 years, the tilt of the axis varies between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees.

The Earth, just like all the planets of the solar system (except Mercury), has a rotation axis that is titled with respect to its orbit around the Sun. Astronomers propose that this is due to energetic collisions between the ‘planetessimals’ which eventually coalesced to form the planets, knocking them off the perpendicular orientation they would naturally have. In some cases, Uranus for example (which has a very large axial tilt), it may be the result of a series of such collisions.

  • I'm of the opinion that Cthulhu chose to make it so.
