Hitler ran like a dog with his tail between his legs because he would have been tried for crimes against humanity.  He knew he was wrong.  trump should be tried for his crimes against the American people by professing still to this day that Covid is nothing to fear while a 1/4 million Americans have already died of this disease and for failing to follow the cdc guidelines himself, for stealing from the American people by not paying any ta

After the war there were the 'Nurnberg Trials' in which the Allies put senior Nazis on trial for war crimes.  As I recollect it was the first time that there had been formal legal trials for war crimes. All was done properly, in the way of normal legal representation, simultaneous translation to/from German, etc.  The most senior Nazis were executed after being found guilty, but some of the slightly more junior ones had long prison sentences. Nurnberg is a city in southern Germany.

Hitler would undoubtedly have been tried at Nurnberg.  That is, if a trigger-happy Russian had not shot him if he had been found alive, or he had not been spirited away to Russia alive, and then probably been tortured and then left to die.

Why the Russians? It was they who captured Berlin, the capital of Germany. Bitter street to street and house to house fighting.   So they were in no mood to do things 'by the legal book'.  The American general in charge of the western Allied troops  thought that Berlin had little importance in the overall picture of beating Germany on German home territory. He was wrong.

     Note spelling Nurnberg, not Nuremberg.

If the British or Americans or French had got hold of him, he would have been put on trial and certainly executed.

He wasn't too worried about that. He was rightly afraid of how the Russians might treat him. They would not have held back.

One way or another he was going to die, probably slowly and painfully if the Russians had got him, so it was the easiest way out .

Likely he would have been snatched by the Russians and taken back to Russia.  He may have been paraded in a cage through Russian cities while the people shouted abuse and even thrown things at him.  He likely would not have even been given a trial and likely would have been hung or starved to death or some other nasty death as his troops did to so many Russians.

As it was when the Russians got hold of his remains they took them back to Russia and had experts confirm it really was Hitler and once confirmed they had the body cut into pieces and the parts taken to different forests in Russia and buried so no one could ever make his burial site a shrine.
