DISTANCE VS DISPLACEMENT QUESTION?

On his fishing trip, Justin rides in a boat 12 km south. The fish aren't biting so they go 4 km west. They then drift 2 km north following a school of fish. What distance he they travel? What is his displacement?

    Distance = total of distances traveled in each movement

    Displacement = how far from start they end up.

    distance = 12+4+2 = 18 km

    displacement: N-S, it is 12–2 = 10 km S

    E-W it is 4 km W

    they are orthogonal, so total = √(10²+4²) = 10.77 k m

    direction = arctan (10/4) = 68.2º

      from the numbers, this is 68.2º S of W
