What stops a store from taking the money for taxes on used items for themselves?

Update:

if its like 1000 and I gotta pay 50 bucks in taxes, they can ring it up as a dollar itten, and keep my 50, who would know?

    Their obligation to remit the proper sales taxes to the state or face massive fines and penalties AND still owing the tax money.

    No different than any other taxes.

    If it's a legit company they claim all their income and pay all their taxes.
