is it normal for vegetable oil to smoke?

is it normal for vegetable oil to smoke when cooking ? and if not what is the effects?

    No it should not smoke and it might be something other than the oil that is burning.

    1. Yeah, mine lights up a marlboro every night

    2. It usually smokes after meals

  • If you're cooking at a high temperature that will happen.  Vegetable and olive oil both have a moderately low smoke point (use peanut or grapeseed oil- these have a higher smoke point).

    Your temperature is WAY too high.

    Vegetable oil's smoking point is rather high, don't burn down the house!!!!

    If you are using it in a deep fryer, then yes, it will smoke, splatter and leave your countertop a nasty mess, but NEVER leave it in a pan on a stovetop EVER!!!

    I used to keep a box of baking soda next to the stove just incase, water will **** your **** up, seriously.

    Look up "Smoking Points", I use peanut oil for Popcorn, cause it's so low that it heats fast and you don't get oily/burned kernels.

    Alton Brown puts out a chart for smoke points of various oils. And yes, it Is normal for vegetable oil to smoke if heated to a high enough temperature.

    If oil is smoking you're heat it too high for that oil.  You are burning the oil and actually changing the chemical composition of the oil. Overheating can actual destroy beneficial nutrients and creaet toxins. 

    The best oils for high-heat cooking are avocado. and coconut.  Corn canola, safflower, and sunflower oils actually have the lowest smoke point, so don't use these for sautés or frying.

    No, it is either too hot or too old (cooking oil breaks down into something like diesel.)

    No, there are few recipes that say to bring it to the smoke point before frying but not the norm. You are using too much heat if it is smoking.
