Suppose a soccer player kicks the ball from a distance 27.0 m toward the goal. Find the initial speed of the ball if it just passes over the goal, 2.4 m above the ground, given the initial direction to be 38.0° above the horizontal.

Easiest is the trajectory equation:

y = h + x*tanΘ - gx² / (2v²cos²Θ)

y = height at range of interest = 2.4 m

h = initial height = 0 m

x = range of interest = 27.0 m

v = launch velocity = ???

Θ = launch direction = 38.0º

2.4 = 0 + 27.0*tan38.0º - 9.81*27.0² / (2v²cos²38.0º)

solves to

v = 17.6 m/s
