why don't more computer science majors make apps to make money with their skills instead of working for someone else?

It's extremely difficult for a single person to write good software. It can take a long time to build something from the ground up and perfect it. It's more feasible when you have a whole team of people contributing.

Hard to come up with a new idea that will make money.
There are well-paying jobs in business.

My oldest son, age 23, actually has made a lot of apps for the iPhone. But the revenue stream isn’t very big. He gets paid based on advertisement clicking because the apps themselves are free. It’s not easy to design an app entirely by yourself.
