Why was the moon put in our orbit?

Let’s just say God did it. Easier than thinking.

It wasn't put there like the finishing tough on a home improvement project. It formed as a result of things that happened in the early solar system. The most likely scenario, as others have mentioned, is that the early Earth was hit by a planet-sized object that blew off a large amount of matter that coalesced in orbit.

Because of a Collision about 4.5 Billion years ago between a fledgling Earth and a Mars sized Proto Planet that has been named Theia
A lot of Thiea's Mass became part of Earth's
But the splashback formed first a ring of molten Earth/Theia Matter
It has been thought three Sattelites Formed omce before they Colagulated into one single Object
And where would we be without Looneys ?Source(s): A Limerick Writer from Darkest Peru His lines only added to two

so farmers on Earth would be able to pick from the fields at night and for guidance if you were traveling most places on Earth... pretty cool right.??? and for human enjoyment to just look at... it has many uses, depends on what you are doing at the time... It was tougher way back when you didn't have roads to follow and you had to travel during bad weather and clouds roll in on you, making you make camp where you are at , if you don't have a compass in hand...

Gotta love how billrussel uses Wikipedia written by fanboys as a source of scientific research.

when the big bang happened, many planets got moons. without ours, Earth wouldn't spin on a constant axis. it would spin uncontrollably and life as we know it would not exist.

it was not "put" anywhere. The origin of the moon is a bit of a mystery.
The Moon is thought to have formed about 4.51 billion years ago, not long after Earth. The most widely accepted explanation is that the Moon formed from the debris left over after a giant impact between Earth and a hypothetical Mars-sized body called Theia. New research of Moon rocks, although not rejecting the Theia hypothesis, suggests that the Moon may be older than previously thought.
