I always hated sardines. My Scandinavian father liked to get the ones in oil and tomato sauce. He ate them on Pumpernickel bread with Danish blue cheese, capers, butter, onion, and what was the other thing he put on there....oh, right, he liked a shot of akvavit with it and some mustard. He used to make me eat the stuff. I ate them and then started receiving sardine and Pumpernickel sandwiches in my lunch whenever he made them on Thursdays and Fridays, when my mother worked. The rest of the week I received a thermos of fried onions with rotini or macaroni.
