Is British brown sauce the same as American BBQ sauce?

No. It’s more like a thick Worcestershire sauce or A.1 Steak Sauce.

 American BBQ sauce is not one sauce.  In the US, there are dozens of varieties of BBQ sauce and they can vary greatly in ingredient and taste. However, the British brown sauce is a condiment which could be used as a marinade for BBQ.
