Can I catch a cold from going out in cold in short sleeves?

Yesterday there was a package left at my door so I went out to get it in my short sleeve shirt and it was freezing cold

Today my nose has been running all day

Did I catch a cold???

The common cold is a virus.  You don't catch viruses from the weather, you catch them from other human beings.  The reason that the common cold tends to spike in winter is that, in areas where it gets cold, human beings spend more time inside, which exposes them to the cold virus more.  The temperature has nothing to do with increasing exposure to the cold virus other than that it causes people to be indoors.  The only way that retrieving a package would cause you to catch the cold is if the delivery driver had it and gave it to you

No. Colds come from germs, not cold air.

    The cold is a virus

and it can only be contracted by being in contact with the virus.

Now, that being said: apparently there is something about the colder weather that enhances the spread of the virus.

A very interesting study was done several years ago

where people (one with a cold, others NOT with a cold)

were put in various situations to see how the cold virus spread.

    What they did

was have these people play cards

(four people to a table, in an enclosed room).

One group would wear face masks.

    One group would wear gloves.

One group would wear no protective gear.

    What they discovered

was the that group with the protective gloves

was the least likely to contract the cold.

So: probably the best way to prevent contracting a cold

is to wash your hands frequently.
