how did the soviet union become so immensely powerful despite being communist filth?
during the cold war. the soviet union was the 2 superpowers on earth.
in fact the soviet union had some remarkable achievements such as human spaceflight and building the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.
In 1919 the greatest technology in Russia was the wooden plough. in 1949 it was an atomic weapon.
does anyone know how the communists managed to turn Russia into a superpower, even when communism is absolutely barbaric filth?
thanks.

You have been misled and manipulated by propaganda which is not objective. There were good reasons that many millions of people supported the Communist system for many decades and regarded it as better as the Czarist system. It does not make any sense at all to compare it with the US or UK, which have lived in and had a very different system, culture, mentality and historical development than people of the Russian Empire before.
-essential food like bread etc and also flats and electrical light were subsidized
- the military was prioritized
- vast human resources
- immense natural resources
-providing better education and a generally more meritocratic society than the czarist system before
-very good scientists
-Hard-working people who had the capability to learn fast
- industrial espionage
-after WW2 diverting resources and wealth away from occupied countries, espeecially from Germany and Czechoslovakia
-not so much waste as capitalist countries where you had many unemployed people not working and not paying taxes; even when there was underemployed staff in a Communist factory (e.g. when waiting for supplies), they usually had something to do (maintenance etc)

Well, WWII left the USSR in control of about half of Europe, although the poorer half. And who was left? Japan was nuked, China was poor, other European countries were badly damaged by war, the UK was giving up its empire, and then there was the US. The USSR had been badly damaged by WWII, but it was one of the two superpowers by default. There wasn't anyone left to be a #2.

They controlled the means of production, and devoted them to the creation of the military.

The government controlled where resources went, so no TV, no personal computers, no Polaroid cameras, few personal cars, limited foods. But lots of push on military supplies, rockets, nukes. When I was there even suggesting someone feeling ill could use a wheelchair to get around was regarded as an insult for implying how primitive their health care was. This was 1980, NOT 1949, anonymous Russian troll. XPEH!

Same thing that brought it down. In order to compete with the US, it's paranoid gov't spent every available dime in weapons procurement to the detriment of it's population. Leading to economic collapse.
