Your age and gender are irrelevant. What does matter when searching for used vehicles is knowledge. Specifically what to look for when examining a vehicle. If you don't know how to do this ( which is okay, many people don't ), solicit the help of a friend or family member that does.
When you do find a vehicle you are interested in, make sure to have it examined by a dealer or shop of YOUR choosing prior to finalizing the deal. This is your best defense against being saddled with unanticipated repairs within the foreseeable future.
As for dependable vehicles, models like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda 3 are usually mentioned. Just keep in mind that your budget will have you looking at older and/or high mileage examples of these vehicles as they generally keep their value. That is why it is still so important to examine each vehicle you're interested in and not rely solely on a model's general reputation.

Jay P. had a great answer. I prefer Toyota Corolla. My last one had 300,000 miles on it and was still going until someone totaled it.
You will probably have no problems with a Toyota Corolla. Just change the oil, brakes and transmission fluid and your good to go forever. Just watch the oil once a week or more. Funny thing is it disappears. Just keep putting in more oil. It will last forever.

Mercury Grand Marquis. They are a bit old now but you can find one with low mileage for that price. Parts and mechanics who can work on it are plentiful. The cars are very durable.
