A laptop is a small, portable computer -- small enough that it can sit on your lap. Nowadays, laptop computers are more frequently called notebook computers, though technically laptops are somewhat larger in size than notebooks, in both thickness and weight.

The biggest and most noticeable difference is the Desktop needs basic external devices to be fully functional, whereas the Laptop has all the necessary devices built-in device.

A Desktop stays in the office or home and needs the computer terminal to be connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse; whereas the Laptop has the built-in components and thus easily transported as one complete device that can be used in most environments.

A laptop is designed to be portable.  The CPU, screen, keyboard and touchpad (in place of a mouse) are all integrated into one small unit.  You can carry it around with you and use it anywhere.  It has a battery to power it when not plugged in.

While a desktop has a large case that contains the CPU.  Usually several times larger that the entire laptop.  The screen is a separate device that attaches to the CPU.  The keyboard and mouse are separate device. It does not have a battery so you can run it when unplugged.  And it is not portable.  You can not carry it around with you.  It is designed to stay in one place, usually the top of a desk.
