If someone mysteriously gives you a couple million dollars in gold without letting you know who they are can you legally keep that gold?

Yes you could keep it unless the giver of the gift obtained it illegally or wasn't free to gift it legally.
For example, you wouldn't get to keep it if it was stolen and you probably wouldn't get to keep it if the person who gifted it owes back taxes or was receiving medicaid or something like that.
Anonymous is totally wrong. Gift taxes and gift tax returns are the responsibility of the GIVER, not the RECEIVER. And there would be no federal gift tax on a couple million anyways. The federal gift tax exclusion is over 11 million.

Why only a couple million? Stop thinking small.

Yes, you'd be allowed to keep the generous, anonymous gift. Uncle Sam would expect his cut though.
