Others would fill in the gap and reach positions relative to their merits.

They’d no longer exist and other companies would buy their assets, including their patents.

Other obvious answers:-

If you leap into a deep pool of water with a large rock tied around your neck, you drown.

If you try to push a length of string it’s far more difficult than trying to pull it.

If the whole of California broke away from the mainland USA in a massive earthquake and sank into the Pacific, then California would no longer exist.
