Why does Shinto use the number 8 million to represent an infinite number of gods?
According to Japan's Shinto religion there are 8 million gods (八百万の神). This number is an ancient way to represent an infinite number.

Simply because they didn't have a word for infinity, so they used an idiom.
It's similar to 40 being used in the Bible to mean "a lot".

and the Tao speaks of the ten-thousand things to represent infinity.....but numerology is all beside the point.

The number eight represents heaven and earth. If you draw it on its side, it represents eternity.
