Is it unethical for supervisors to befriend their employees ?

In the event of a supervisor  or manager befriending an associate  on social media  or therefore in other aspects outside of work- do you feel this is not very logical and somewhat  unprofessional?

Unless a work function  , such as an annual  company  picnic or Christmas party .

Unless there's a policy not to fraternize with employees at all, or they're showing favoritism to the employee because they're friends, then it's none of your business who they make friends with.
