Does the engine of a space shuttle produce sound as it orbits earth?

    NO!!! Because there is no medium (air), for it to vibrate. When air vibrates on the ear, it is sound.  Also in space the engines of a rocket , would not be running.  Space ships move by the use of acceleration from the launch pad, to overcome gravity , and them space-ships 'sling-shot' , through orbital/gravitational acceleration. 

    Electromagnetic waves, light, infra-red, etc., will travel through a vacuum. 

    Mechanical waves, P & S Waves need some form of medium to travel through.

    It doesn't have to, they turn it off once it's in orbit.

    sound is only heard in an atmosphere , theres no atmosphere in space.

    The engine wouldn't be running if it were orbiting.

    Three reasons why Space Shuttle engines do NOT produce sound while in orbit.

    1) the last Shuttle flew in 2011

    2) while in orbit the engines were not firing, except when restarted for the return to Earth

    3) sound requires an atmosphere, which does not exist in space

    The main engines were shut down just prior to them achieving orbit; The external tank was jettisoned about 8 1/2 minutes into the flight, and they continued for another 4 minutes on the OMS engines... once in orbit, aside from attitude control, engines weren't used at all - they orbited using their momentum for speed. 

    When it was time to come home, they'd flip the ship around and heading tail-first, they'd fire the OMS engines to decelerate; the astronauts could hear the rumble of the engines through the frame of the shuttle, but noise wouldn't be able to travel in the vacuum of space.

    Sound is the reception of compressions and rarefactions in the air.

    At the distance that objects orbit the Earth, the air is too thin for that to take place so the answer to your question is, "no".

    Not out of earths atmosphere and not firing except orbit insertion and retro firing. When crews talk over radio during liftoff, you can hear the engine sounds.

    The maneuvering rockets sound like a faint 'PFFFFT' to the crews.

    No. The engine is not used while in orbit. They are in a free fall. The engine is used to leave orbit to come back to earth. 

    And there is no sound in space. There is no air to transmit sound.
