Is this hypocritical?
If someone advocates for striving for excellence, even when perfection is impossible, but they also oppose the concept of boycotts because they will “inevitably buy something from a company whose owners’ political views are different than mine”, is that hypocritical?
Why not boycott the obvious, well known companies that conflict with your principles? If some slip through the cracks, it’s still better than not trying.

I don't think it's hypocritical, but the person is making an excuse for buying whatever he wants to buy. The point of a boycott is to show someone that there are people who disagree. It happens after some particularly obvious expression of political belief. We don't have to know the views of everyone we buy from.
