Because if the people graduating are idiots, imagine how much more stupid they would be without an education

You go to school, in younger years, to build a healthy foundation of knowledge, to build upon in high school to become a functional adult capable of handling day to day business activities in society. You go to college to expand on that foundation and gear education toward specific curriculum to use in a career that would get you higher income(depending on your choice of major aka majority education field selected) than those who do not go to college. This will allow you(or should)to provide better things and financial stability for yourself and your children, should you have them.
Functioning in society involves the ability to read and make decisions based in critical reasoning and math. In example, you need to find your first apartment, well you must read the terms of the agreement to rent the space and reason if it will be best for you financially in comparison to another apartment. If you dont read well, you may sign yourself up to spend more for less amenities or sign something that says you cannot sue them and they have final settlement decision rights in the event of a dispute which could mean bad news for you as no one likes to find fault in themselves.
You also need to be functional at math in determining best credit card interests, deals on appliances and products, determining if your electricity bill is correct, etc
You need computer skills as most companies have some online presence and even Disney World utilizes computer technology for experiences. Contracts are also done in day to day living between you and a contractor and renting venue spaces for parties, etc. If you cant read and understand the pertinent details, you can have a bunch of hidden fees outside of your budget(using those math skills from school again).
Basically, you go to school to make sure you dont get taken advantage of in life, make educated and informed decisions, as well as earn a higher income to provide a better lifestyle and financial stability.
