The question is. Ashley is 10 years older than her sister Brianna. Two years ago, Ashley was 6 times Brianna’s age. How old is Brianna now?

Let the present age of :

Brianna  =  x years.

Ashley is 10 year older than Brianna.

Hence present age of Ashley = x + 10 years.

Two years ago : Brianna's age was = x - 2  years.

And 2 yrs ago, Ashley's age was = Present age - 2 years  =  ( x + 10 ) - 2 = x + 8

It is given that : Ashley was 6 times Brianna’s age.

=>  x + 8 = 6 [ x - 2 ] 

=> 6 x - x  =  20

=> x = 4 yrs. ........ Present age of Brianna  .......... Answer

By 'Trial and Error 

A = 14; B  = 4

Two years ago 

A = 12 & B = 2 

2 x 6 = 12 

Algebraically 

A = B + 10 

A - 2 = 6( B - 2) 

A = B  + 10 

A -2 = 6B - 12 

Substitute 

B + 10 - 2 = 6B - 12 

B + 8 = 6B - 12

5B = 20 

B = 4  (Brianna age now)!!!!!

lets ages now be A and B:       so A =  B + 10

and two years ago: A - 2 = 6 (B - 2)   which makes  A  = 6B -10

Substitute for A and solve

6B  - 10 = B + 10   which gives 5B = 20, so B = 4
