Is it unreasonable for my landlord to expect me to drive 30 minutes to their house to pay the rent?

No it's not unreasonable. But there is probably a much better way to pay them than physically handing them the rent money. Online banking, transfers to their account from yours, automatic payments--lots of options here. Talk to them again.

yes, unless there is a specific reason like rent is over due and if you don't pay today they are filing for eviction.

Yes. It does not legally have to be paid in person. You can legally mail it to them and there is nothing they can do about it as long as they receive it. Make sure you mail it early enough to be in their hand by the due date.

Depends. If mail isn't getting to them and you're not paying on time, then they need you to do it. Combine the trip with something else.

Ask the landlord for their banking details and set up a direct debit with your bank

Why can’t you just mail a check?

Yes. They should provide you a way to pay it electronically (there are several apps and websites for small landlords) or you should mail them a check or transfer the funds to their bank account.
