Why does my smoke alarm make weird noises?
I live in student halls and quite frequently (probably once a day/every other day) my smoke alarm will make strange noises. It will usually be a hissing noise (like the sound of air escaping from something) followed by a faint click. Sometimes it will be one of those noises on their own.
Is this something worth calling maintenance about or is it okay just to ignore?

Smoke detectors are intended to make a chirping noise once the battery needs changing. ... This usually occurs in electrical powered smoke alarms with a battery backup. When this happens, the way to stop the chirping noise is to reset the smoke alarm to manually clear the error from the processor.

If it is hard wired, which is most likely, it is a built in automatic performance check.

It is an automatic, battery operated room spray so the place smells nice.
It would be set on a timer to go off regularly.

That's not a smoke alarm that's a room deodorizer they look like smoke alarms. But they have a little motor inside of it that once in awhile it pushes a button mechanically indispenses some deodorizing agent that's the hissing sound that you're hearing and the click from the mechanical arm
