Why is Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall socially ranked after the princesses of the blood ?

For private occasions, the Camilla has social precedence after the princesses of the blood: Princess Anne, the Princess Royal and Princess Alexandra of Kent.

Camilla's ranking varies; when she is with her husband, she ranks higher than the other princesses of the blood royal, but when she is alone, she has lesser precedence. This is due to the fact that Camilla's status comes from her marriage to Charles, not through birth or bestowal. She assumes Charles' status and will be consort of the king when he ascends the throne. Without Charles present, while Camilla is still future consort, it gives  the princesses of the blood royal a chance to shine and have higher precedence--it is a nod from the Queen to the born royal princesses of their birth status.

Both Camilla and Catherine outrank Anne, Alexandra, Beatrice and Eugenie because they are wives of future kings. The Queen's choice to grant the princesses of the blood royal higher precedence when Charles or William are not present effects Camilla and Catherine. It's, as explained, just the way the Queen has chosen to acknowledge royal birth status, and a way to acknowledge both Anne's and Alexandra's official works.

The queen decides the order of precedence. As consort of the Prince of Wales she takes precedence when other members are present.  When she is alone the royal princesses take precedence.

    Because that's how rank *works*.

  • Because the princesses of the blood royal - like Beatrix, Eugenie and Royal - are nicer than Princess Camilla.

Camilla is a consort has and never will have any Royal Blood she is Not ranked at all

Because she was not born a princess.  She gets her status from her husband Charles.  When the two are together, they have status because of his.  But, when she is alone, a princess of the Blood, i.e. a "true" Royal comes ahead.  That is just how things work.

Prior to the current rules being issued women who married into the royal family took their precedence based on their husbands at all times

It was reported in 2005, after the marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla, that Anne did not want to have to curtsy to her new sister in law at all occasions.  Whether or not this is true can not be confirmed.  HOWEVER, it is a known fact that The Queen did issue an order in Council on the subject.  The order changed the rules so that when their husbands are not present, women who have married into the royal family take their precedence after those who were born princesses (except for their own daughters).

Camilla Parker Bowles was merely a mistress of Charles. She was married to another man for 22 years. They divorced when her affair with Charles became public. Charles married the woman when she was 57, in a civil wedding by a registrar in a guildhall. This may help explain one of the reasons why she is viewed as she is.

That only applies if she is not accompanied by her husband. If alone it would be expected that royal blood princesses would assume precedence over those who are princesses by marriage. The Queen issues directions on such matters, so it is what it is.

Isn't everybody 'socially ranked' according to their position in life?   The Duchess of Cornwall is married to the next in line to the British throne, so she is ranked higher than those you name, regardless of them being of the royal blood and that includes the York daughters.   It's just how it goes.   I'd suggest her ranking is more relevant on PUBLIC occasions, not in private.   Those you have mentioned know and accept how things are.
