Are cats 🐈 the fastest 💨 land species?

Pronghorn can reach top speeds of around 55 mph and 30 mph for over 20 miles, cheetahs can reach speeds of over 60 mph.

The fastest land animal in the world, a cheetah can reach 69.5 mph in just three seconds – faster than a sports car accelerates. Its body has evolved for speed, with long legs, an elongated spine, adapted claws to grip the ground and a long tail for balance.

That depends on the distance. The saluki (a breed of sighthound) can outrun any animal over a three-mile distance, cheetahs, pronghorns, greyhounds, whatever.

Over a marathon distance? Surprise! It's a human.

    No! They are not.

One species of felid (cat), Acinonyx jubatus) (Cheetah) is the fastest felid. However, it is quite unique and most felids are not as fast. They are also the fastest terrestrial animal.

    In Africa they are.

North America it's the Pronghorn antelope.

    Antarctica it's probably the Penguin.

Edit: You are correct. That's why I specified continents.

Cheetahs once inhabited North America just as camels and horses did.

The Pronghorn likely evolved with such speed to evade the fastest predator.
